In 1986, after Chernobyl disaster, a sarcophagus was built to stop radioactive contamination.
In 2016, the new safe confinement project was confirmed. It will be completed with the installation of a polyurethane membrane qualified and manufactured by CNIM. This membrane of exceptional size (1.5 meters wide and 2 kilometers long), is designed to provide leaktightness between the new arch and the existing buildings. It will protect the atmosphere from any new release of radioactivity from reactor no. 4 that was damaged in 1986.
Since the inauguration of new Chernobyl containment in November 2016, CNIM has produced and delivered all membranes. They will be installed by NOVARKA between spring and summer 2017.
In this movie, discover all the project steps, technical challenges and numerous tests we made. Discover the innovative solutions we found to combine flexibility, so as not to damage the existing sarcophagus should the arch move, strength to withstand a tornado, tear resistance and resistance to temperature variations.
