Treatment and recovery of waste

Masdar and Bee’ah have finalised with CNIM the Design, Build and Operate agreement for the first waste-to-energy facility in the United Arab Emirates

Located in Sharjah, this facility is the flagship project of the Emirates Waste to Energy Company, the joint-venture between Masdar and Bee’ah that has secured financing commitments from Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), Siemens Financial Services, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC).

Both agreements have been announced during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week that took place from January 13 to 20, 2018.

The Sharjah waste-to-energy plant is due for completion by 2020, helping to achieve the UAE’s aim of diverting 75% of its municipal solid waste from landfill by 2021.

The plant will treat more than 300,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste each year, or 37.5 tonnes of solid waste per hour. It will also have the capacity to generate approximately 30 megawatts of energy.

The plant has been designed to meet the strictest environmental standards, complying with the European Union’s Best Available Techniques, widely recognised as the global standard.
